Area 51
The Truth About Area 51
Area 51, sometimes called Groom Lake because
it encompasses the dry Groom Lake, is a
detachment of the Edwards Air Force Base
located deep in the Mojave Desert in Nevada.
The Area 51 Base is formally known as Air
Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3;
the name "Area 51" is the generic name given
to Groom Lake on a 1950s map of Nevada test
sites to promote secrecy. The purpose of
Area 51 is not officially known, as the
events that happen there are classified
as top secret, but its history suggests
that it is mostly used to test new, experimental
military aircrafts and weaponry.
The Area 51 base was established in 1955
by the CIA for use in the development of
the Lockheed U-2, a reconnaissance aircraft.
The base was regarded as a temporary infrastructure
to be used exclusively for this project,
and remained almost entirely inactive for
about two years after the project was removed
from the base. The base was then tested
and deemed ideal for a potential emergency
landing site, but ultimately not listed
as one so as to preserve the secrecy of
the base. Area 51 was not put back into
regular use until 1960, when it was used
for the further development of reconnaissance
aircrafts, and, ultimately, the evaluation
of foreign aircrafts.
An air of mystery surrounds Area 51, not
only because of its notorious secrecy, but
because of the high volume of reports of
unusual occurrences, such as UFO sightings,
near the base. Regardless of the credibility
of these reports, these factors have caused
the development of several conspiracy theories.
Most of these theories involve supposed
work with extraterrestrial life and/or technology,
interaction of humans with such life, or
the development of technology concerned
with time travel, teleportation, or weather
control. These theories are fueled in part
by the claims of several people who claim
to have worked at the base and been involved
in such projects. Area 51 is often connected
to the famous Roswell incident, as many
speculate that the object crashed in the
incident was taken to the base and subject
to unknown activity.
The CIA acknowledges a remote chance that
UFO sightings may be genuine sightings of
interplanetary aircrafts and should be investigated.
Though the true operations of Area 51 are
unknown, it is known that only 10% of UFO
sightings are reported by credible observers
and cannot easily be explained and that
over 50% of UFO sightings in the base's
early days are known to be due to reconnaissance
flights, especially those of the Lockheed
U-2. The number of UFO sightings in the
U.S. has also increased since not long before
the establishment of Area 51, which one
may interpret as supporting either stance
toward the speculated alien activity in
Area 51.
